Spin-down screen filters and centrifugal sand separators remove sand and grit after the pump, protecting your plumbing, fixtures and appliances. They don’t protect the pump itself: if sand is wearing out pumps, the fix is in the well.
Before you hire
- Size the filter or separator to your pump’s actual flow range, not your pipe size, and check the pressure loss at that flow.
- Separators and spin-downs usually go between the pump and the pressure tank so sand never reaches the tank.
- Fit shut-off valves on both sides, and put sediment filtration ahead of iron treatment, softening and UV.
